Dress Code

2008-2009

Dress Code Policy (K-8)

Uniforms

Uniforms are part of the DKJA philosophy as they encourage modesty and appropriateness, as well as creating an atmosphere where no one is forced to feel out of place. Students should dress in a way that promotes active participation in school and dedication to learning. Students should be neat and clean and clothing should reflect our Jewish value of modesty and respect for one’s body.

All students in the school, Grades K–8, must purchase and wear the school uniform. The uniform code will be strictly enforced. In the event that a student is out of uniform, the teacher will remove the student from the classroom until a uniform is delivered to the student. Monday through Thursday, students may select any of the uniform options. All uniforms should be neat, clean, and size appropriate. All knit polo shirts (white, navy, and red) and all oxford shirts and blouses must be purchased from our approved uniform supplier or the DKJA Shuk, and have the DKJA logo. Middle School Polo shirts are only available in the DKJA Shuk. All shirts must be tucked in, with the exception of the Middle School polo shirt. Only uniform shirts are acceptable at all times, even if worn under a short sleeve uniform shirt.

All navy or khaki shorts, pants, skirts, jumpers, kilts, and skorts must be “uniform style” and not have logos displayed thereon. Belts are required with all shorts and pants that have belt loops in Grades 3 and up. The length of girls’ skirts should be no shorter than 2" above their knees.

Shoes must be closed, flat shoes.  No sandals, platforms or heels are permitted. Socks should be coordinated and visible above the line of the shoes. Leggings are not permitted.  Girls may wear navy or white tights.

All jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, and sweatpants must have the DKJA logo, and be purchased from the DKJA-PTO. DKJA sweatpants are permitted only in Grades K-5.

Pants, shorts, and skirts must be worn at the waist. Pants may not be so long that they touch the ground nor may they be rolled up above the ankle. Shorts may not be rolled up.

Hats must not be worn or carried on campus at any time during the school day except during recess and outdoor activities for sun protection. They may be kept in backpacks, cubbies, or lockers.

Hair must be well groomed, neat, and tidy. Boys’ hair must not reach lower than the top of a standard shirt collar and must not be an unnatural color. Boys bangs must be trimmed above eyebrows and half of their ear must be visible. Boys may not wear ponytails or braids. At DKJA, earrings are appropriate accessories for women and girls and must be no larger than the size of a quarter coin and appropriate length. Male students will not be permitted to wear earrings in school. Should a male student wear an earring to school, he will be asked to remove it. No large jewelry or jewelry displaying any kind of insignia, deemed inappropriate by the school, may be worn. Use of a moderate amount of makeup is permitted only for girls in Grade 8.

Shabbat Dress

On Fridays and on Erev Chag (Eve of Holiday), students will be expected to wear certain components of their uniform. The required uniform dress for Friday is as follows:

Boys – Tucked in white oxford shirt, navy shorts or pants, kippah (DKJA preferred)

Girls – Tucked in white oxford shirt or blouse, navy skirt, jumper, kilt, or skort;
navy t-shirt dress.

Grades 5-8:

Boys – Tucked in blue oxford shirt, navy pants, DKJA tie, and kippah (DKJA preferred)

Girls – Tucked in blue oxford shirt or blouse, navy skirt, jumper, kilt, or skort

Physical Education Dress

Students in Grades K - 4 may wear their gray P.E. shirts to school on P.E. days with regular navy uniform shorts or DKJA sweatpants, except on Friday. Students in Grade 5 will not be changing in the Locker room this year.  They will wear the MS P.E. shirts and P.E. shorts on P.E. days.  Donna Klein sweat pants are permitted on cool days only.  Students in Grades 6 - 8 will be required to bring their gray P.E. shirt and navy P.E. shorts or navy DKJA sweatpants and change in the locker rooms prior to their P.E. class. P.E. uniforms must be purchased from the DKJA PTO.

Dress Code Exceptions

For special school events, appropriate non-uniform attire and footwear will be acceptable with permission from a school principal.
